Chapter 53-1: Settle the Debt
The intense stares from the crowd made Luo Ying and her
other two sisters feel somewhat uneasy. Though they were all Commander Luo's
daughters, only Luo Sheng had done outrageous actions. The rest of them were
well-behaved young ladies.
In contrast to the three sisters' discomfort, Luo Sheng
walked over calmly and instructed Hongdou to request a queue number plate from
the gatekeeper.
Hongdou smiled before speaking, "Could we please have a
queue number plate?" She had to smile sweetly to not interfere with Miss's
important affairs. That's what Kou'er had been pestering her about, and she
thought it made some sense.
A fourteen or fifteen-year-old girl with big eyes and snowy
skin, making her smile especially charming. The gatekeeper boy unconsciously
found his lips curving upward as he asked, "And who might you be?"
"We are from Luo Commander's Mansion. Today, all four
Misses came here to invite Divine Doctor to treat our Commander," Hongdou
explained hastily.
The gatekeeper boy's expression immediately grew stern, and
he responded coldly, "I apologize, but today's queue number plates have
already been given out."
"Already given out?" Hongdou's voice rose
suddenly, a hint of disbelief in her expression. "It's only been a short
while, and they're all gone?"
The gatekeeper boy pointed to the tea stall: "There are
many people here today."
The people occupying the tea shed remained quiet, but their
gleaming eyes betrayed their eagerness for some entertainment. Sure enough, the
Luo Commander's Mansion members were once again turned away by Divine Doctor
Li. This time, it was even more disheartening—they hadn't even managed to
secure a queue number plate.
Indeed, many people were present outside Divine Doctor Li's
residence today. Still, a significant portion of them were merely spectators
seeking amusement and not seeking queue number plates. At least they had a
sense of decency; they wouldn't hinder those who genuinely needed Divine
Doctor's treatment just for the sake of entertainment.
"I apologize. Please try coming earlier tomorrow,"
the gatekeeper boy said with a hint of irritation, signaling for Hongdou to
leave.
"Tomorrow?" Hongdou's eyebrows lifted, and she had
long forgotten Kouer's advice, "Our Commander's condition is critical;
waiting until tomorrow is not an option. How can we possibly wait that
long?"
"I understand your urgency, but there's nothing to be
done. Only those holding queue number plates are allowed inside. That's the
rule established by the Divine Doctor," the gatekeeper boy responded
impatiently.
He was well aware of Commander Luo's pressing situation, but
what of it? He could vividly recall the displeasure on Divine Doctor's face
when some of Commander Luo's adopted sons had come to request treatment for
their father. Divine Doctor Li had no intention of treating Luo Commander.
Allowing them in now would only burden Divine Doctor.
"I think you're intentionally making things difficult
for us—" Hongdou continues to argue.
"Hongdou." Luo Sheng intervened lightly.
Hongdou held back the curse words and took a deep breath.
Calm down. Miss said that there was no need to use force to solve problems that
could be solved with money. The little maid swiftly pulled out her purse and
placed it in the gatekeeper boy's hand, suppressing her anger and smiling,
"Please, show us some understanding. Our Commander's condition is critical—"
The gatekeeper boy promptly brushed Hongdou's hand aside as
if it were on fire and said with a righteous face, "What do you think
you're doing? How can you insult Divine Doctor's rules with money!"
While money had its merits, its value also depended on what
it was compared to.
As a gatekeeper for Divine Doctor, he might gain longevity
by absorbing the Divine Doctor's immortal aura. He couldn't let money cloud his
judgment and hinder his path to longevity.
The beautifully crafted purse hit the ground with a thud,
instantly turning Hongdou's face red with anger.
