Chapter 19: Divine Porridge
Wang Dafu respectfully bowed and reassured, "Miss, please
don't worry. It is my duty as a doctor to take care of the patient." Li
Dafu was surprised by this display of respect toward Luo Sheng. He couldn't
understand why Wang Dafu held such admiration for her, but he was caught up in
the enthusiasm surrounding Wang Dafu's creation of a remarkable fever-breaking
pill. Therefore, he followed Wang Dafu's lead, and bowed to Luo Sheng.
Sheng Dataitai and others: "..."
It
was unusual for doctors to show such profound respect. Physicians, especially
those with a certain reputation, often carried an air of arrogance. Their
respect was typically reserved for high-ranking and powerful families. However,
this time, their respect seemed genuine. While everyone was still caught off
guard by this unexpected display, Luo Sheng had already left the room,
accompanied by Hongdou.
Sheng Dataitai instructed Shuangye to inform Sheng Laotaitai
that Luo Chen's fever had subsided, ensuring her peace of mind. She then turned
to Sheng Dalang and the others, saying, "You may all go back now; let your
Biaodi rest."
"Yes," Sheng Dalang and the others complied,
walking out of the courtyard. As they saw Luo Sheng and Hongdou walking ahead
of them at a leisurely pace, they couldn't help but feel a mix of complex
emotions. Sheng Jiayu hurriedly caught up with Luo Sheng, clutching the hem of
her skirt and calling out, "Wait!"
Luo Sheng halted and turned around. Sheng Jiayu gazed at the
calmly composed girl in the red dress, her hesitation evident. At that moment,
a sudden realization struck her: Was this still the Luo Sheng she thought she
knew? Perhaps... she had never truly understood this Biaojie.
"Why are you stopping me?" Luo Sheng inquired
calmly. She was well aware of the subtle changes in Sheng Jiayu, but she didn't
attach much significance to it. To her, there wasn't much difference between
Sheng Jialan and Sheng Jiayu. One was a coward who trembled in fear after
causing harm, while the other liked to quarrel but could be ignored.
If Sheng Jiayu's petty quarrel turned harmful, Luo Sheng
didn't mind cleaning her up too. There was no special attachment or sentiment
towards them. With these thoughts in mind, Luo Sheng glanced toward Luo Chen's
courtyard entrance. To her, Jinsha County held no particular significance. The
only person deserving of her attention was Luo Chen. That was the debt she owed
to Miss Luo.
"That medicine..." Sheng Jiayu began, momentarily
forgetting her question. "It's a fever-reducing pill," Luo Sheng
explained concisely as she walked past Sheng Jiayu. Sheng Jiayu stood there,
stunned momentarily, then stomped her feet and muttered, "Who asked for
this!"
"What's the matter, Damei?" Sheng Dalang, who was
following behind, asked with concern. "It's nothing. I'm going back to my
room," Sheng Jiayu replied.
As she walked a few steps away, Sheng Jiayu overheard Sheng
Silang mumbling behind her, "Why does it seem like Dajie always loses her
temper whenever she encounters Biaojie?"
Sheng Jiayu froze for a moment, her hand itching to go back
and pinch Sheng Silang's face. But as she pondered his remark, she swallowed
her annoyance silently and quickly left the scene.
After returning to her courtyard, Sheng Dataitai asked Sheng Jiayu to come. "Mother, what's the matter?" Sheng Dataitai dismissed the other maids and only left Shuangye in the room to attend to her. She asked Sheng Jiayu directly, "Jiayu, did you personally witness your Biaojie buying medicine from Jishitang yesterday?"
"I saw it with my own eyes," Sheng Jiayu replied.
She was already feeling down due to Sheng Silang's comments, and her anxiety
grew as her mother questioned her. Sheng Dataitai comfortingly patted Sheng
Jiayu, saying, "It's not that I don't believe you; it's just that there's
something I can't understand."
"What don't you understand, Mother?" Sheng Jiayu
asked. Sheng Dataitai continued asking, "Did Wang Dafu give her the
prescription?" Sheng Jiayu answered without hesitation, "He must
have. Didn't she admit that Wang Dafu made the pills?"
Sheng Dataitai picked up the teacup from the table and
lightly rubbed her fingers over its surface. "Since Wang Dafu has created
such a miraculous pill, why have we never heard of it before?" she
pondered aloud. "Such a remarkable medicine would make a doctor famous and
benefit countless patients. There is no reason for Wang Dafu to hide and not
use it."
"Perhaps... perhaps it has just been developed... and Biaodi was fortunate to be the first to try it," Sheng Jiayu suggested tentatively. Sheng Dataitai shook her head in disbelief. "Even if it's a coincidence, Wang Dafu is a doctor at Chunxingtang. Why would he go to Jishitang to obtain the medicine? And why did he need your Biaojie to get it?"
The question struck Sheng Jiayu. It reminded her that she
felt something was amiss when she called out to Luo Sheng earlier. After
pondering for a while, Sheng Jiayu voiced her speculation, "Mother, could
it be... that prescription originally belongs to Luo Sheng?"
Sheng Dataitai looked at her daughter and nodded. "Most
likely, that's the case. Jiayu, remember, your biaojie is Commander Luo's
daughter. She has seen and knows a lot. There are likely many things that she
takes for granted, but they are actually rare and precious. Don't underestimate
or look down on her in the future, as it may embarrass you."
Sheng Jiayu lowered her eyes and nodded solemnly:
"Mother, I understand."
Luo Sheng returned to her courtyard and instructed Hongdou
to have Qinghong and Hancui clean the small kitchen, and she started to cook
porridge. She began by boiling glutinous rice and ginger together in a pot.
After boiling the water twice, she added scallions with their roots, and once
the rice had softened, vinegar was added.
A peculiar smell wafted through the air. Hongdou watched as
Luo Sheng personally prepared the porridge and grew anxious. "Miss, are
really you cooking porridge?" Not poison? Hongdou swallows the last part
of her sentence.
"Yes," Luo Sheng replied calmly.
With the unusual scent lingering in the air, Hongdou gasped,
"Is it even edible?" Luo Sheng glanced at her and replied casually,
"I made it for my brother."
Hongdou breathed a sigh of relief and stroked her chest.
Thank goodness Miss has a younger brother! However, when she thought about Luo
Chen lying on the sickbed, the little maid couldn't help but feel sorry:
"Miss, you added ginger and green onions and even threw vinegar into it.
It might not taste good—"
Luo Sheng frowned. The term "throwing vinegar" sounded
a bit strange. Despite this, she patiently explained, "It may not taste
great, but this porridge helps induce sweating and repelling cold, so it is
good for him."
As the master and servant conversed, the porridge had
finished cooking. Luo Sheng instructed Hongdou, "Take this Divine Porridge
to my brother." "Divine Porridge?" Hongdou was perplexed.
Luo Sheng calmly replied," That's the name of this
porridge." Hongdou glanced at the food container with a complicated
expression and praised: "It's strangely appropriate." Perhaps only
the gods can eat it.
However, Miss made it herself! Hongdou confidently carried
the food box and left. Luo Sheng didn't waste any time and decided to prepare
another pot of meat porridge.
For the best results, it is best to use well water and let
the porridge simmer overnight on low heat. This way, the meat porridge is ready
to be served to Luo Chen early the following day. Luo Sheng carefully handled
the ingredients, and for a brief moment, her troubled heart found peace since
waking up in this body.
She loves to cook, transforming ordinary ingredients into
delectable dishes. Luo Sheng pondered when this passion first took root within
her.
Mother is frail and has a poor appetite. In Zhen Nan Wang
Palace, the number of cooks outweighs the number of doctors. Among them are
retired imperial chefs and skilled culinary experts. Perhaps during her
mother's birthday celebration when she was still young, she noticed her mother
eating a few extra mouthfuls of the dim sum she had made. From that moment on,
a deep affection for cooking bloomed within her. It became a habit, and she
immersed herself in cooking, hoping each bite her mother took would contribute
to her well-being.
Well, if Luo Chen eats a few more mouthfuls of the food she
cooks, his body will undoubtedly become stronger. And once he grows stronger,
she can leave this place.
