Chapter 60-2: Father-Daughter Bond
"Eldest Brother, please stop." Luo Sheng called
out.
Pingli, who was walking ahead, halted and turned to her.
"What's the matter, Third Miss?"
"I want to know the details of Father's
assassination." Before, it was imminent to save Commander Luo, so she
didn't have time to focus on these matters. But now, it's time to unravel the
truth.
Pingli appeared somewhat conflicted. He then glanced at Luo
Ying and Luo Qing.
Luo Qing began, "That day, when Father was drinking in
the pavilion, Si Nan[1]
approached him, claiming that Third Sister had left something for him to
deliver. Father, without much suspicion, allowed Si Nan to get close. Inside
the brocade box Si Nan presented was a jade hairpin. As Father examined the
hairpin, Si Nan suddenly attacked Father with the dagger concealed under the
box..."
"A jade hairpin?"
Luo Qing looked slightly surprised, "Third Sister
didn't know? That jade hairpin was frequently worn by Mother when she was still
a maiden, and it was later passed down to you. That day was the anniversary of
Mother's passing..."
"I don't know how that jade hairpin ended up in Si
Nan's possession," Luo Sheng answered Luo Qing's question skillfully.
"That wretched scoundrel must have stolen Third
Sister's jade hairpin!" Luo Yue gritted her teeth and scolded.
Luo Sheng asked Pingli, "How did you deal with Si
Nan?"
"He's currently held at Jinlin Guard's Quarter
Prison," Pingli answered.
"Have you discovered his motive for assassinating
Father?" Luo Sheng inquired.
Pingli smiled politely. "Third Miss, rest assured.
We'll thoroughly interrogate him and report to Godfather in due time." His
response made it clear that he didn't want to share more details with Luo
Sheng.
"But I want to know," Luo Sheng asserted with
confidence.
Si Nan was snatched home from the street by Miss Luo, only
to bid his time for the perfect moment to assassinate Commander Luo. This
showed Si Nan had a level of careful consideration and planning that went
beyond the abilities of an average person.
Pingli fell silent momentarily before speaking, "Based
on our initial interrogations, Si Nan's father was arrested by Jinlin Guards
more than ten years ago, leading to the ruin of their family and leaving only
the young orphaned Si Nan and a servant. Si Nan has always harbored the desire
to seek vengeance for his father, and it so happened that you brought him back
to our mansion two years ago..."
"Then you can tend to your matters, Eldest Brother.
I'll go meet Si Nan," Luo Sheng insisted.
"Third Miss, there's no need for you to dirty your eyes
by going to a place like the prison," Pingli implored.
Luo Sheng sneered in response, "He stabbed Father and
deceived me. I can't let him off so easily."
Pingli's complexion shifted slightly, and he continued to
persuade, "Once our interrogation of Si Nan is concluded, we will ensure
he suffers a fate worse than death. There's no need for Third Miss to take the
matters personally."
A hint of mockery flickered in Luo Sheng's eyes. She didn't
buy the explanation Pingli was offering.
Jinlin Guards were known as the Emperor's watchful eyes and
possessed the authority to investigate and arrest. Over the years, many
officials have lost their families due to Jinlin Wei's arrests. If what Pingli
said were indeed the case, why had Si Nan's interrogation not concluded even
after a month had passed? And why were they afraid that she might impulsively
attack Si Nan?
Pingli tried coaxing her as if she were the former Miss Luo.
"Very well," Luo Sheng uttered these words, and
she observed Pingli's expression slightly relaxed. She bent the corners of her
lips: "But I still want to meet Si Nan. I promise not to take any action,
and I'll also have Fifth Brother accompany me. So, Eldest Brother, you will
agree to my request, right?"
Pingli had no choice but to agree. With Godfather now awake,
the words of the Third Miss carried significant weight. If he disagreed, she
might become hostile towards him.
